DIY Disinfectant: Harnessing the Power of a NACLO Generator and Table Salt

In today's world, maintaining hygiene and cleanliness has become more critical than ever. With the constant threat of germs and viruses lurking around, it's essential to have effective disinfectants readily available.

While commercial disinfectants are easily accessible, there's a growing interest in creating homemade solutions that are just as potent but more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

One such method involves utilising a NACLO generator and common table salt to produce a powerful disinfectant right in the comfort of your own home. And at no cost.

Understanding the Science: NACLO Generator and Table Salt

Before delving into the process of making your own disinfectant, let's understand the science behind it. NACLO, or sodium hypochlorite, is a chemical compound known for its excellent disinfectant properties. It's commonly found in household bleach and is highly effective in killing bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.

A NACLO generator is a device that produces sodium hypochlorite solution by electrolysing a saltwater solution. When an electric current is passed through the saltwater (NaCl), it undergoes electrolysis, breaking down into its constituent elements: sodium (Na), chlorine (Cl), and hydrogen (H). The chlorine ions then combine with the sodium ions to form sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), the active ingredient in bleach.

Materials Needed:

A NACLO Generator Kit: You can purchase a NACLO generator kit online or from specialised retailers. These kits typically come with electrodes, a power source, and instructions for assembly and use.

Table Salt (NaCl): Opt for pure table salt without any additives or anti-caking agents for best results.

Water: Use clean, distilled water for optimal electrolysis. Although ordinary tap water will be suitable, too.

Container: A non-metallic container such as a plastic or glass vessel to hold the saltwater solution.

Safety Gear: Rubber gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself during the process are advisable.

Step-by-Step Process:

Assemble the NACLO Generator: Follow the instructions provided with your NACLO generator kit to assemble the device properly. Ensure that all connections are secure and the electrodes are correctly positioned.

Prepare the Saltwater Solution: In your chosen container, mix water and table salt in a ratio of approximately 1 tablespoon of salt per gallon of water. Stir until the salt is fully dissolved.

Fill the Container: Pour the prepared saltwater solution into the container, leaving some space at the top to prevent overflow during electrolysis.

Connect the Generator: Carefully insert the electrodes of the NACLO generator into the saltwater solution, making sure they are fully submerged. Connect the power source according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Initiate Electrolysis: Switch on the NACLO generator to start the electrolysis process. You'll notice bubbles forming around the electrodes as electrolysis occurs. These bubbles are composed of hydrogen gas released at the cathode and chlorine gas released at the anode.

Monitor the Process: Allow the generator to run for the recommended duration, typically around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the desired concentration of sodium hypochlorite solution.

Safety Precautions: During electrolysis, chlorine gas is produced, which can be harmful if inhaled. Ensure proper ventilation in the area or conduct the process in a well-ventilated space. Avoid direct contact with the generated chlorine gas and always wear appropriate safety gear.

Testing and Storage: Once electrolysis is complete, you can test the concentration of the sodium hypochlorite solution using a chlorine test kit, if available. Transfer the solution to a clean, labelled container for storage. Store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Some NACLO generator kits have their own spray bottle in which you will make the sollution, as they have built-in electrodes.

By harnessing the power of a NACLO generator and simple table salt, you can create an effective disinfectant solution right at home. This DIY approach not only saves money but also provides you with a convenient and eco-friendly alternative to commercial disinfectants.

However, it's crucial to follow safety guidelines and proper procedures to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the disinfectant produced. With a little effort and the right equipment, you can take control of your hygiene routine and keep your surroundings clean and germ-free.

We have found our NACLO generator makes a superb disinfectant spray for cleaning chopping board, work surfaces, sinks, bath, shower, etc.
